It’s 2012 and this year is absolutely flying by with my first placement fast coming to a close. I was recently been told that my next placement is in Group Executive Functions based in London. With my Customer Service role about to come to an end I guess it’s natural to look back reflect over my first six months with LBG.

Looking out of my office window over the past couple of weeks had been a sight that I am not used to back at home. Snow lining the surrounding hills, its safe to say that the big chill is certainly very well acquainted with Halifax! In the office though, its business as usual with the coffee machine becoming an ever popular feature helping out with those occasional early mornings and late nights!

It has been a while since I last made a post and this mainly due to the business working life which I currently hold. I am still working within my role in enterprise architecture and design for wholesale finance. Recently I have started numerous new projects looking at commercial aspects of the bank; my work focuses mainly on improving current banking processes through the introduction of new technology. Whilst I am incredibly busy I am still enjoying the placement and I am being supported well by my line manager in terms of personal development.

I think this time of year must breed ‘the Blues’: the splintering cold winds; the regrets of our Christmas over-indulgence and a scary realisation that we’ve already reached 2012. No one can escape it. But to sit in a melancholic haze, with a hot cocoa, reminiscing over 2011 is no cure – the only medicine is action.

This is my first blog of the New Year and the time is continuing to fly past on my first placement. The announcement of exclusive talks with the Coop for the divestment of 632 branches has really ramped up the pace on the Verde project, I have been stretched over and above my day job as an Infrastructure Project Manager. As part of the IT TSA team I am continuing to support the deal team in their negotiations; providing commercial schedules and most importantly acting as a gateway for the legal teams into the technical IT solutions and services.

It’s getting to the exciting time when the General Management graduates find out their next placements! Whilst I am enjoying and developing within my current role, the prospect of what is to come next is really thrilling. Consequentially I am taking my phone with me everywhere I go so as not to miss the call! I will of course let you blog followers know what I shall be doing next and once the placement starts at the end of March will keep you up to date with how things are going.

January is a time that tends to be associated with negative connotations: post-Christmas debt, un-kept resolutions and January Blues. Luckily for the HR Graduates however, we were able to come back to work after the Christmas break with a much more positive focus. This month saw the official launch of our fund-raising events for the Challenge to raise £36, 000 for our Charity of The Year, Save the Children. [More]

A few weeks ago I went to a networking event in the Security and Fraud division of the group. It was so interesting to hear about other parts of the business and the potential possibilities for my next placement outside of HR in the business.

The HR graduates and I are well and truly stuck into our CIPD courses now.

This is my very lightly seasoned, festive blog. I can assure you that working during this period means a bit more than an extra espresso shot in your coffee, the customary Secret Santa and extensive train delays. After a busy few weeks, a recent performance review with my Line Manager has given me the opportunity to look over the past few months, and forward, to my development in 2012. [More]

New York

Posted by Colm Ó Flaherty on 13/12/11 @ 07:30

So after my last post I decided to take my own advice and develop my network further. I had planned to take some annual leave at the end of November to visit friends in Boston and New York. While it was just a holiday I took the opportunity to email two of the graduates on the 2010 programme that are based in the New York office to see if maybe we could meet up while I was in New York and talk about their experiences and roles.
